International Capital and Management Company Collaborates on Medical Training for Better Performing Teams

Using a training program developed by industry leader, Allen Communication Learning Services, ICMC is providing research-supported training to improve medical team collaboration.

SALT LAKE CITY (December 13, 2011) — Allen Communication Learning Services is providing a key learning course to support the technical training physicians and nurses receive during their formal schooling. International Capital & Management Company (ICMC) partnered with Allen Communications Learning Services to design a new four-module medical training course that focuses on essential skills around team building, communication, and accountability and has helped patient care teams make considerable improvement in team effectiveness.

According to an article from the Journal of Continuing Education in Health Professions, the new era of healthcare requires a new approach to continuing education that includes teamwork competencies. The teamwork approach to caring for patients is a shift from how most clinicians are trained. Most are educated with other individuals from their specialty, but rarely interact with the other clinicians who will ultimately contribute to patient care. When clinicians can build on their technical training by drawing on the strengths of the other care providers, patients receive better care.

The four-module training ICMC developed in conjunction with Allen Communication, teaches each team member how to function effectively in a team structure in order to operate seamlessly and optimize patient care. The four modules focus on basic team structure, roles and responsibilities, accountability and team conflict management.

We’re pleased that we had the opportunity to team with ICMC and their award winning Center for Learning to develop the training for this innovative approach to team building in a healthcare environment. We believe this approach to training medical professionals will result in a substantial improvement in the quality of patient care,” said Ron Zamir, CEO of Allen Communication.

These courses also align with research conducted by the Rand Corporation indicating that teamwork training can improve patient safety. According to research reported by the Rand Corporation, nearly 60 percent of deaths and major permanent impairments in a review of emergency department malpractice claims could have been avoided with appropriate teamwork. “Bringing this blended learning approach to clinicians has created more opportunities for leadership and team training, which will provide a competitive advantage to our clients in healthcare,” said Johanna Dillon, Executive Director, Leadership and Cultural Excellence, ICMC.
