Custom Learning Technology

The digital transformation of the learning function has given us an abundance of commercially available applications and platforms to meet the most common and universal needs of organizational L&D. These technologies are designed to meet most but certainly not all use cases. Generally speaking, if your use case is specific to your organization or unique to your industry it is less likely that you can fully meet that need using commercial learning tech.

So, what are these use cases for custom learning technology? They may entail authoring complex, custom simulations using rich media such as AR/VR, 3D modeling, or other emerging technologies (such as AI). They may also include needs for custom learning portals, which provide targeted learning management for particular customer, learner, or organizational requirements (related to access, security, cross-functional experiences, or unique systems integrations). Yet another type of use case may be to elevate the learner experience—not within the limits or templates of an LXPbut for greater LX personalization, engagement, cohort-based learning, guided practice, etc.

For over 40 years, AllenComm has designed and developed award-winning learning technology. Often, this work is associated with a strategic initiative for onboarding, compliance, leadership, sales enablement, or skills development. However, these services may also begin with a consulting engagement or align with broader L&D priorities. Because of our expertise in a range of industries—including healthcare, manufacturing, finance, and high tech—we have breadth and depth in meeting industry-specific requirements. See Our Work for examples.

HP Enterprise Creates a One-Stop Brand Portal

HP Enterprise created an award-winning solution that met the organization’s need for centralized access to brand assets and guidelines with context-specific brand trainingall in the same location. Instead of accessing brand resources in one location and brand training in another, which would decrease the utility of the training, AllenComm created a combined portal that could bring learning into the flow of work

Authoring Solutions

Decades ago, AllenComm created one of the very first authoring platforms for the learning industry. Since then, we have designed generations of authoring systems to support custom eLearning and blended solutions. Although we leverage off-the-shelf applications whenever possible, we are continuously challenging ourselves to create scalable learning technologies to support robust gamification, simulation, high-end media, and personalization. We can design and develop for a single initiative, or we can design a scalable solution that can be leveraged by the client’s in-house developers.

Custom Solutions

  • Gamification: Apply the elements of game design to improve learning.
  • Simulation: Provide realistic practice—both cognitive and technical—in a controlled, risk-free environment.
  • Assessment: Automate the creation, management, and personalization of skills assessments, evaluations, reviews, diagnostics, etc.
  • Mobile Learning: Create mobile apps for learning in the field.
  • Social Learning: Support collaborative learning including cohort activities, project-based learning, and peer reviews.

Scalable Innovation

  • Custom Template Creation: Enable greater scale with advanced templates for gamification, simulation, assessment, etc.
  • Training and Coaching: Provide workshops, work in tandem with in-house teams, etc., to ensure adoption of custom learning tech.
  • Maintenance and Support: Troubleshoot on demand and support your in-house team; update tech to work with new applications.

Learning Portals for Custom Learning Management

A learning portal is not a learning management system (LMS), learner experience platform (LXP), or learning content management system (LCMS), but it may have characteristics of all three. The rationale for developing a learning portal usually comes from a unique organizational, industry, or market context. These solutions are often combinations that bring together the features of e-commerce and learning, for example, or customer support and learning.

Portal Use Cases

  • Skills-Based Learning: Manage skills at the level of each learning objective, tracking development and proficiency and providing personalized feedback.
  • Learner Experience: Guide and sequence learners on personalized journeys comprised of multiple experiences delivered over extended periods.
  • Instructor-Led and Hybrid Learning: Create tracking and management of resources, instructors, and materials for ILT, V-ILT, and hybrid learning.
  • Combination Use Cases: Bring learning into the flow of work to create situational relevance and create proximity to the point of need.

Value

  • Branded UX: Create a streamlined and highly branded UX for a specific program or audience.
  • LMS Optimization: Take full advantage of existing APIs to extend functionality.
  • Multi-Tenant Solutions: Create separate learning databases based on client or security needs.
  • Scalable Features: Combine pre-built functionality with add-ons and custom technology.

Learner Experience (LX) Add-ons Enhance Existing Functionality

AllenComm offers a unique set of web services that function as add-ons to your existing learning technology. They extend functionality or add additional capabilities depending on the needs of your program. This category of learning technology is not well known, but it is a practical, less expensive alternative to upgrading your core learning platforms.

Learning Use Cases

  • Collaborative and Social Learning: Include cohort-based activities, cue up peer or manager feedback, etc.
  • Ratings and Reviews: Include learner-generated reviews of resources and courses (and personalize options based on reviews).
  • Action Plans: Create goal-setting apps that prompt learners to plan and execute on their goals.
  • Homework and Project-based Learning: Request that learners share content (text, audio, video, etc.) with other learners for individual or project-based learning.

Administrative Use Cases

  • Learner Dashboards: Provide learners with dashboards that aggregate all of the feedback on their learning journeys.
  • Advanced Data Collection and Reporting: Support more granular tracking and reporting—often at the level of each discrete learning objective.
  • Analytics Packages: Ensure stakeholders have easy access to the key metrics most closely associated with performance outcomes.
“This training has been well-received at all levels of our organization. We are getting feedback that this training takes the learner experience to the next level. Learners love the fact that they have the opportunity to interact with our customers earlier in their training journey. One of our main objectives was teaching our specialists to be resourceful, and this training does just that!”
